Run,Forrest,Run!The movie clip I have chosen to deconstruct is Forrest Gump. And the part that interests me is when Forrest reminisces about when he was young and finally broke free from his leg braces in the process of running for the first time. Throughout this film you can observe the mise-en-scène used, and how the sound helps the audience accentuate the situation and what the character at that point is feeling. Forrest Gump is the main protagonist featured in this movie. |

The scene is introduced with Forrest and his best friend Jenny walking home from school, along a long country road. The lighting is normal – no special effects. As the scene begins, birds are tweeting- which is an ambient sound. This sets a peaceful mood as if everything is all right. However when the bullies throw rocks at Forrest, the mood suddenly changes, but only the diegetic sounds remains.
Diegetic sounds of yelling "HEY DUMMY” which accompanies their seemingly threatening body language. They then start to chuck stones at Forrest’s face, and his forehead starts to bleed. In this part of the scene, action code is used, Forrest looks towards Jenny and she tells him to run away, however Forrest has leg braces, this connotes that he is disabled therefore he is unable to run. This indicates that something is about to happen, which makes the audience more engaged because they want to know whether the bullies are going to take him down, or if Forrest is going to be able to escape from them. |
In this scene, the non-diegetic sound is parallel. This is useful because if the music is contrapuntal wouldn’t fit with the feelings of the scene – which might confuse the audience. Also a sound bridge is used to connect one scene with another; where the music fades in. But as it does, the audience feels the tension.
And in this part of the scene, you can see the three bullies chasing Forrest with their bikes and Forrest, struggling to run away. The tension now builds up, as there is a dilemma. |
Forrest gradually starts to pick up a pace, the faster he runs, the louder the music gets. Jenny from behind bellows "RUN FORREST RUN!". This line is used repeatedly throughout the movie. When his leg braces break off, it makes the leg braces the centre of the attention, this connotes strength and freedom. Also now he can “run like the wind blows” as he quotes in the scene, to a lady in the bus stop – who clearly doesn’t care as her body language indicates that she’s too busy reading a magazine.
The music is uplifting which helps outbring the mood of the scene. You can clearly see now that Forrest can do whatever he likes, now that he can run without his leg braces. |
The speech and body language used in this film really showed what type of character each person is. For example when the boy makes fun of Forrest in the beginning, he says “Look, I’m Forrest Gimp” – when clearly his name is Forrest Gump. This is showing us that he is a bully, as they are mocking Forrest's name intentionally, indicating that they are not nice people.
